Overview

Gosaikunda Lake Trek takes you to Holy Gosaikunda Lake at 4,381 m which comes under Langtang National Park. The holy Gosaikunda Lake is most popular pilgrimage destination among both Hindu and Buddhist followers.  Especially during full moons and Janai Purnima in August, thousands of pilgrims visit this holy site. There are also some festivals which are celebrated by Shamans. As per the Hindu Mythology, it is the abode of Lord Shiva and her wife Gauri. It is believed that when Shiva was thirst after having poison from Samundra Manthan, he extracted water and quenched his thirst with his trident. Also, Shiva’s follower’s claims the full image of Shiva can be seen in the middle of the lake.

This trek is equally important for mountain views, flora and fauna. Langtang Range, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu Range and Langtang valley can be see along the trail.  On the way to Gosaikunda Lake from Laurabinayak, three lakes Bhairabh Kunda, Sarashowti Kunda and Gosaikunda dominate the trail.

Gosaikunda Trek starts from city sightseeing in Kathmandu and next day drive to Dhunche in Rasuwa. Then we follow our trail along with the Trishuli River which is sourced from Gosaikunda Lake. Our trail goes to Chandanbari (Shing Gompa) Cholangpati, Lauribinayak and finally to Gosaikunda Lake. In this trek, we follow the same way back to Dhunche and to Kathmandu.

Detail Itinerary


Once you arrive at Kathmandu Airport, our representative will pick you from the airport and takes you to the hotel. Upon arriving at hotel, check-in and rest of the day is free. In the evening, we will take you to Nepalese Dinner with cultural program followed by Trek Briefing.

Activity Duration:

This day, our city tour guide takes you for sightseeing of Kathmandu valley to see few monuments. First, we drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square and pay homage to living Goddess, Kumari and walk around the square. Then we drive to Pashupatinath Temple which is a Hindu Temple for Lord Shiva at the bank of Holy Bagmati River. Then we end our day by visiting Boudhanath Stupa which is the biggest Stupa of Asia. In the evening, you can buy or hire equipment at Thamel if you need.

We start our journey early in the morning and drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi by a private 4 Wheel Drive Jeep which takes about 6 hours drive. You head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Dhunche. While passing along the road on the bank of Trishuli River you catch a glimpse of Ganesh Himal, terraces and green hills. As you go to Dhunche you feel as if you are heading towards deep land. Please note that the first part of your drive up to Trishuli Bazaar is quite smooth. The path then moves along the gravel road. During the rainy season, the way is sometime blocked due to landslides.

Today our trek starts along and crossing the Trishuli River which is originated from Gosaikunda Lake. Our first leg starts on flat level with some human settlements and Mineral water factory. The trail continues s a long steady climb to reach Chandan Bari through Pine, Silver Oak and Rhododendron forests.

Activity Duration:

We start our trek through southern ridge and get into Cholangpati just behind the ridge. The trail from Thulo Syapru connects here. After having lunch, we continue ascent to Lauribinak through dense forest of Rhododendron. Lauribinayak is located in the hilltop and provides magnificent views of Sunset and Sunrise over Langtang and Ganesh Himal. It is possible to continue to Gosaikunda Lake but considering High Altitude Sickness, we recommend to stay here.

Our trail steeply ascends all the way to Gosaikunda. We follow a rugged trail with dramatic views; to the west Himal Chuli (7,893m) Manaslu range (8,156m), Ganesh Himal range (7,406m), Tibetan peaks and Langtang Lirung. On a clear day, even the Annapurna range can be seen rising up behind and to the north across the valley is Langtang Lirung. We pass few huts in the high pasture of Laurebinayak, cross a small ridge and have your first views of the holy lakes. There are about a dozen lakes in the Gosainkunda Basin, the main three being Bhairabkunda, Saraswotikunda, and Gosaikunda respectively. After lunch at Gosaikunda, you can walk around the lake and go to surrounding hills.

Activity Duration:

Being as the holy lake, you can consider taking dips in the lake to pure your body and soul before breakfast. After breakfast, we trek down to Shing Gompa following the same route. In Shing Gompa, you can visit Gompa and cheese factory. Rest of the day, you can simply relax reading books or admiring the nature.

Today is our last walking day of our trekking and the first part of the trails descend through pine, silver oak and rhododendrons forests with marijuana plants up to crossing a suspension bridge over the Sing Gompa Stream. Now the path stretches at flat level through some human settlements and mineral water factories up to Dhunche.

After breakfast at lodge, we start our 4 WD to Kathmandu. In the evening, we will host farewell dinner to mark the success of the trek.
