Overview

Limi Valley, Only Rare and Mystic Valley where we can see Vibrant Tibetan Culture and Lifestyle with Century Old Buddhist Traditions blend closely with Shamanistic Practices are still an important part of Daily Life. Limi Valley on the Upper Humla Region in Mid West Northern part of Nepal which shares border with Tibet has Matrimonial relationship with Tibetan people. Limi Valley Trek takes us to the Isolated Villages and Culture which are not touched by modern development. Bhotias people of Tibetan descent on Northern Highlands and Hindu Khasas people in the Southern Valleys and Riverbeds makes this place Culturally Diverse. Our trek to Limi valley follows the Ancient Salt Trade and Pilgrimage Route and cross the Nara La Pass (4,620 m) and Nyalu La Pass (4,900 m) which gives us the spectacular views of Nepalese Western Mountains and Tibetan mountains. From the Border Town of Hilsa, we turn Northeast towards the Limi Valley. During the trek, we may encounter Elusive Snow Leopard, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Jackals, Hyenas and Musk Deer.

Trek to this Off The Beaten Trail starts with City flight from Kathmandu to Nepaljung and remote flight to Simikot. We follow the Karnali River which originates from Mansarobar Lake in Tibet. We cross Nara La Pass to the border town of Hilsa. From Hilsa, we head Northeast towards Limi Valley.  Once we enter Limi valley, we trek through barley and buckwheat fields and pass beautiful Stone Villages of Til, Hilga and Jang. The Rinchhen Ling Monastery in Jang is the sacred Gompa of this region which was made before more than 800 years of Gergu Pa sect of Buddhism. When we leave Limi valley, we cross Nyalu La Pass which gives us the stunning views of Valley, Mountains and Mt. Kailas which is the Holiest Mountain in Tibet. We make a circuit and descend to Selima Tso Lake at 4,630 m reconnected at Kermi and end our trek at Simikot.

During our trek, we stay at Tented Camp with full camping facilities and enjoy fresh meals prepared by our Highly Experienced Kitchen Team. The best season for this trek is from May to October, as the passes are likely to be covered in snow the rest of the year.  

Detail Itinerary


After arriving at Kathmandu International Airport, our office representative welcomes you with Garland and takes you to hotel in Kathmandu. In the evening, we will have briefing on trek and equipment check by our Trek Manager and Trek Guide. Then, we will take you for dinner to make you introduced with Nepalese food habits and Culture.

Activity Duration:

After breakfast, we will take you for guided tour of Kathmandu city. We will begin with Pashupatinath Temple which is famous Hindu Temple of Lord Shiva at the bank of holy Bagmati River. After this, we continue to Boudhanath Stupa, which is giant Stupa in Asia and a focal point of Tibetan Buddhism in Kathmandu. Then, we drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square where Nepalese Kings used to get Throne. Interesting places to see here are Taleju Temple, Statue of Kal Bhairabh and Hanuman, Temple of Jagannath (Erotic Temple) and Kastamandap Temple from which Kathmandu got its name. We visit Kumari Temple and pay homage to the living goddess, Kumari and also walk around the Freak streets which was famous during Hippie Era in 60's and 70's.

After breakfast, we will drive to the domestic airport for 50 minutes flight to Nepalgunj. This is one of the biggest towns in western Terai and Business Hub of the area. In Nepalgunj, we visit Bageshwori Temple, a very famous Hindu Temple of Goddess Bageshwori, Durga and also another famous Temple of Lord Shiva with mustache next to her.

After early morning breakfast, we drive to airport for 1 hour flight to Simikot. Simikot is a district headquarters of Humla at the ridge overlooking Humla Karnali River. Simikot is beautiful town with several ethnic groups like Chettris, Thakuris and Buddhist Lamas.This day, we walk around Simikot and stay overnight for acclimatization.

Activity Duration:

Today as being our first day of the trek, we make it short and trek to Dharapuri. We start our trek with a short climb over Simikot Lagna Pass at 3,000 m. From the top of this forested hill, we get the view of Simikot town. Then we descend down to Dharapuri for an hour.

Activity Duration:

The trail follows the Karnali River with many ups and downs and passes fields of barley, buckwheat and potatoes until we arrive at Kermi. Kermi is a first completely Buddhist village on our trail and almost all people depends on agriculture. From Kermi onwards, all the villages are Buddhist villages. There are two hot springs near the village. You can enjoy in any of them. There is Laikyo Gompa and Lhundrup Choeling Gompa near the village and you may consider visiting them.

We follow the Karnali River through pine forest before we pass Sali Pass (3,115 m) and descend down to Chumsa River. Today we see Mt. Saipal. After lunch, we continue to Yalbang. You may visit Namka Khyung Zong Gompa which the biggest monastery of this region and with in-house 130 monks and a Rinpoche of Red Hat Sect. they have daily puja at 4 pm and 7 am every day and you can attend.

Activity Duration:

Our trail goes high above the Karnali River and in about 20 minutes, we pass Yangar village. Our trail goes on frequent ups and downs and we cross Karnali River by a wooden suspension bridge. After crossing the river, our path climbs high above Karnali River and along the upper side of George. Along the way, you may encounter sheep carrying salt, an old trade that still exists today. After around 3 &1/2 hours, we arrive at Muchu village. Actually Tumkot is not in our trail and 1 hour away from Muchu. The actual Tumkot village is 20 minutes south of our trail. There is a famous Dhungar Choezem Monastery, only Sakya Monastery in Humla which is 30 minutes climb from our camp site.

After we leave Tumkot, the trail climbs slowly and steady. Once we left the village, landscapes changes to rockier, desolate and with only low juniper forest. We walk on dirt road which is being built. Then we cross a small village of Pani Palwang, from here Thado Dunga is further 1 and ½ hours after Yari village.

Activity Duration:

Today we trek to Hilsa which is a border town between Nepal and Tibet. We climb to Nara La Pass at 4,620 m which gives us rewarding views of Yari and Tibet. We may encounter mules and Yaks Caravan on the trail. As we climb to the pass, the landscapes turned into Alpine landscape. The Nara La pass is marked by piles of stones and prayers flags and you find yourself surrounded by barren mountains in tones of brown, coopers, ash and dark yellows. After spending few times at pass, we have a long descent down to Hilsa. Hilsa is a border between Nepal and Tibet and one of the ports to enter Tibet. During the high season, here will be thousands of Indian Pilgrims crossing border to Mt. Kailas and Mansarabor.

Activity Duration:

Just on few minutes after crossing the bridge, there is immigration post to Tibet. We cross the suspension bridge on Karnali River and head north east to Limi Valley on newly built road. This valley is famous for Snow Leopard and Blue sheep. Today our trail gradually climbs on rocky trails. We walk in a dramatic landscape, where is a small flat area close to the huge Rock written Buddhist Mantra “OM MANE PADME HUM”. This is how this place gets its name Manipeme.

Activity Duration:

Today we are entering to first village of Limi valley. We climb steep to Lagna Pass at 4,300 m from where we see the view of Limi Valley. Then the trail descends to a small stream and continues down and cross a slope. We climb to rocky ridges and make a short descend to two chortens those mark the end of the ridge above Til Chu. From the end of the ridge, we Til Gompa and barley fields of Til village. Then we descend down to our campsite at the confluence of Takchi Chu (River) and Til Chu. Near our campsite, there is Snow leopard trap as every village does in Limi valley as they kill local people.

Activity Duration:

We descend for an hour to Tiljung and cross suspension bridge and follow the Tagtsi River into narrow valley. Just below Tiljung, we will reach Tagtsi Stream, the main tributary of Karnai River which flows from the east along the Jang and Halji villages towards Til. We again cross the river and walk for around 30 minutes to Halji village which is the biggest and most important village in Limi Valley. We visit 800 years old Rinchhen Ling Monastery and continue to Jang Village which hosts another 250 years old monastery. From Jang, we walk another 1 hour to our campsite at Chagzur Hot spring.

Activity Duration:

Today, we will have extra day at Chagzur Hot spring. You can completely rest and enjoy at hot spring or we can hike to Lapcha Syar at 4,900 m to witness Sacred Mt. Kailas and Holy Manasarovar Lake which takes around 5/6 hours to go and come back at campsite.

After a must deserving rest, we continue across the meadows, crosses few streams and climb over a rocky ridge. Then the trail becomes pleasant and we cross a bridge, walk on sand dunes that form the lake of Tshom Tso and arrive at Talung. Below this plateau, there is Gumma Yok which was once the most important village in Limi valley and now is abandoned. We make visit to this ruined villages. After crossing the river, we ascend for hour to our campsite at Talung which is a grazing field for yaks and cattle of Limi Valley people in summer time.

Activity Duration:

Today is challenging yet rewarding day as we are crossing the highest pass of the trek which gives us rewarding views of Humla and Tibet. From the pass on clear day, we see Mt. Kailas in Tibet, Mt. Saipal in Nepal and many other peaks. After spending sometime at the pass, we descend down to Selima Tso Lake. From this lake, we descend further to Tshongsa meadow at 4,140 m and cross Tshongsa River where we walk into the first vegetation of rhododendron forest. On the trail, we see Tshongsa rocks and Tshongsi Tsan waterfall. From here, we walk another hour to our campsite at Shinjungma.

Activity Duration:

We cross Tshongsa River and walk along the left bank of Zhetse Khola to the east. Then we ascend for 3 and ½ hours and cross the same river. Just before the bridge, we can visit summer camp of Chyodok village herders and the beautiful scenery of Zhetse valley.

Activity Duration:

We begin our trek by ascending through the forest towards Langdogd Pass. From the Pass, we descend steep through juniper and birch forests until we arrive at Takhor Khola. We cross Takor Khola and walk another 1 and ½ hours to reach our camp at Dinga Lekh. This is the summer village and used to be autumn trading center for Limi and Southern Humli people.

Activity Duration:

Today is our last leg of our trek and we are ending our trek passing by villages of Yakpa and Tangin and Aul Dinga. Then we descend to Yakpa Khola at 2,600 m and cross the wooden bridge and climb to the Okhreni village. From this village, we walk along the new road until we reach Simikot Lagna. Then we descend to Simikot making our journey a complete circuit of Limi Valley trek. in the evening, you may trek our trek members.

In the morning, we walk to the airport for flight to back Nepaljung and then to Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, you may have complete rest unless you want to visit Thamel or if you have personal stuffs. In the evening, we host Grand Dinner to celebrate your success of Limi Valley Trek.
