Overview

Eastern Nepal, the foothill of world’s third tallest Mt. Kanchenjunga is the least visited area of Nepal but blessed with Natural beauty and vivid culture of mix people. From the famous Tea Gardens to the view of Eastern Himalayas including Mt. Kanchenjunga and local bazaars are major attractions among many. The region is fertile, highly artifact, vivid and equally friendly of diverse cultured people.

Hills of Eastern Nepal Tour has been designed to give the travelers the best of the Eastern Region which is different than other regions of Nepal. With several hills covered by tea gardens and narrow windy roads is equally famous for pilgrimages sites, beautiful landscapes, mountain views and amazes any kind of traveler. During the tour, we visit Kanyam, Ilam, Phidim, Terathum, Dhunkuta, Hile, Chainpur and Tumlingtar. Tumlingtar is the biggest valley between Arun River and Sabha River and the largest Tar in Nepal.

As we are mostly covering hilly regions of Eastern Nepal where roads are narrow with many bends, our driving hours in a day has been considered very wisely with less than 5 hours drive in a day with multiple stops in scenic points. The best season to visit the Eastern Nepal is around the year except in Monsoon in June, July and August.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu Arrival (1,350 m/4,430 ft)

Arrive Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met and welcomed by our representative. Please look for signage of Alpine Holidays with your name once you come out of Arrival Terminal Hall after collecting your luggage. You will be escorted by our representative to the hotel. In the evening we will organize a Welcome Dinner at a traditional Nepalese Restaurant where you will enjoy a Nepalese cultural program as well as a fine local Nepali meal.

Day 02: Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple

After breakfast, we do sightseeing of monuments in Kathmandu. We visit Kathmandu Durbar Square and also pay homage to living Goddess, Kumari. Then we will drive to Swayambhunath Stupa (also known as the Monkey Temple) on a small hill over-viewing Kathmandu and mountains. In the afternoon, we will visit Pashupatinath Temple, a famous Hindu temple at the bank of holy Bagmati River where Hindu people cremate dead body for salvation. Afterwards, drive to Boudhanath Stupa which is among the largest Stupas in South Asia, and it has become the focal point of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.

Day 03: Fly to Bhadrapur (92 m/300 ft)-40 Minutes & drive to Ilam -94 kms/3 Hours

After breakfast, we drive to Domestic airport for scenic flight to Bhadrapur. Bhadrapur is a city in eastern part of Nepal close to Indian border. From airport, we drive to Ilam on Private Jeep through hilly roads. We make several stops on the way and especially at Kanyam which is famous for tea gardens and view point. In the evening, we walk around the Ilam town, visit tea gardens and local bazaar.

Day 04: Drive to Phidim (1,756 m/5,761 ft) -60 Kms /2 Hours via Mai Pokhari

After breakfast, we drive to Phidim. Also we will visit Mai Pokhari which is holy pond for both Hindus and Buddhist pilgrims and 1 hour away drive. Phidim is very enchanting with the view of snow-capped mountains, lush green hills, beautifully arranged tea gardens and mystically foggy landscape. We spend the entire day at Phidim which is famous for small tin roofed houses, small concrete buildings and surrounded by two rivers, Phewa and Hewa.

Day 05: Drive to Mayanglung Bazaar, Terathum- (1,500 m/4,921 ft)-100 kms/5 Hours

In the morning, we drive to another town, Mayanglung which is headquarter of Terathum district. A story behind the naming of the place is popularly recited in the area. There was a Chautari (Rest Point under a big tree). Two porters who had stopped on the Chautari were amazed when their cooking pot fell down from the fireplace after an unusual shaking which made a "Myang Lung" sound which they gave to the place as a good name. A temple is standing there that carries a history of the ancient Chautari. Also Myanglung is Onomatopoeic for the sound of a cat meowing and refers to an old station of a Limbu temple (which remains today) in the town which had a resident cat. Myang means the cat voice and Lung means stone.

Day 06: Explore Terathum Area

This day, we explore the nearby places such as Basantapur. Also visit the Sakaranti Bazaar located in a beautiful setting with the majestic and remarkable views of the Himalayas. Some four kilometers east of the bazaar is the place called Chuhandanda which is of great historical importance and also the bazaar is the best place in the district if one wants to observe the Limbu culture.

Day 07: Drive to Dhankuta (925 m/3,035 ft)- 70 kms/ 3 Hours

In the morning, we drive to Dhankuta on the North-South Koshi Highway. The large bazaar of Hile further up the road is an important trading centre and major road head, serving the remote hinterlands of the Arun Valley and Bhojpur. Villagers walk for many days from surrounding districts to trade in Hile and Dhankuta Bazaars.

Day 08: Excursion to Hile (1,948 m/6,392 ft)

After early breakfast, we drive to Hile which is about 13 km north from Dhankuta. Hile is a popular destination to enjoy astounding scenery of surrounding Himalayas. It is a very attractive hilltop village in Eastern Nepal and famous for Sunrise and Sunset over Tea Gardens. Later we drive to Pakhribas which is yet another 5 km from Hile. Here we can see the two temples, churches and a Buddhist monastery. Naangi Danda is also one of the best tourist spots in Pakhribas for excursion. Then we drive back to resort in Dhankuta.

Day 09: Drive to Chainpur (1,200 m/3,937 ft) -99 kms / 4 Hours

We drive to Chainpur. Chainpur is an ancient market place of the Eastern Region of Nepal. Chainpur has been famous for hundreds of years for Karuwa, a special kind of water mug with pipe tap sculptured with artistic carving on exterior of it. In the evening, we visit local market.

Day 10: Drive to Tumlingtar (285 m/935 ft)- 24 kms /1 Hour

After relaxing morning, we drive to Tumlingtar which is the biggest valley between Arun River and Sabha River and the largest Tar in Nepal. Also it is the main gateway to Makalu Barun and Arun Valley Trek. The indigenous people of Tumlingtar are Kumal whose traditional profession is Pot making and now inhabited by mix people. Rest of the time, we can walk around the town and visit local monuments.

Day 11: Fly back to Kathmandu-35 Minutes

After breakfast, we spend free time until we fly back to Kathmandu at around 11 am. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, we drive to hotel and free time for your rest and personal activities. You may consider visiting Thamel in the late afternoon for walk around and shopping local souvenirs. In the evening, we host farewell dinner to mark the success of Eastern Nepal Tour.
