Overview

The Rain Shadow area of Mustang Region sculpted by Kaligandaki River is divided in two parts, Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang. Upper Mustang is Restricted area and need special permit for the tourist where as Lower Mustang is easily accessible. Until 1950s, Mustang was a separate kingdom and Lho Manthang as a capital, is practicing Tibetan Buddhism and distinct culture. 

Low Altitude, great landscape, mountain views make the Lower Mustang Trek, an idea trek for all the categories of trekkers to understand the Tibetan Buddhist Culture of Himalayan people with an easy access unlike to Upper Mustang. We fly to Jomsom from Pokhara and trek between Jomsom and Muktinath along the Kaligandaki River beds with its barren lands passing through Kagbeni, Jharkot, Muktinath and Lupra villages.

We can trek to Lower Mustang around the year even in the monsoon and winter. We stay in nice tea houses during our entire trek. During the trip, we visit monuments in Kathamndu and Pokahra as well.

After arriving at Kathmandu International Airport, our office representative welcomes you with Garland and takes you to hotel in Kathmandu. In the evening, we will have briefing on trek. Then, we will take you for dinner to make you introduced with Nepalese food habits and Culture.

Activity Duration:

After breakfast, we will take you for guided tour of Kathmandu city. We will begin with Pashupatinath Temple which is famous Hindu Temple of Lord Shiva at the bank of holy Bagmati River. After this, we continue to Boudhanath Stupa, which is giant Stupa in Asia and a focal point of Tibetan Buddhism in Kathmandu. Then, we drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square where Nepalese Kings used to get Throne. Interesting places to see here are Taleju Temple, Statue of Kal Bhairabh and Hanuman, Temple of Jagannath (Erotic Temple) and Kastamandap Temple from which Kathmandu got its name. We visit Kumari Temple and pay homage to the living goddess, Kumari and also walk around the Freak streets which was famous during Hippie Era in 60's and 70's.

Activity Duration:

After breakfast, we drive to Domestic Airport for 25 minutes flight to Pokhara. In Pokhara, we visit Devi’s fall, Mahadev Cave, Tibetan Refugee Camp, Bindabasini Temple and do boating at Fewa Lake to visit Barahi Temple in the middle of the lake. In the evening, we walk around Lakeside Bazaar.

After early breakfast, we fly to Jomsom over the Kali Gandaki Gorge with the view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range. Jomsom is a headquarter of Mustang region. From Jomsom, we do a day trip to Marpha village down to the Kali Gandaki Valley. Marpha is a village of Thakali people and famous for its Apple Orchards and Apple brandy. The village is characterized by the traditional flat mud roofed houses with piles of firewood neatly stacked upon it. Wooden carved windows, long main spotless flagstones, and paved alleys are some of the unique features of Marpha. This day we can stay overnight at Marpha village as well and trek to Kagbeni next day.

Activity Duration:

From Jomsom, we trek to Kagbeni passing by Eklebhatti. As a part of our trail, we walk on the flatten riverbed of Kaligandaki River with the view of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri and Annapurna Mountains. Kagbeni in the confluence of Kaligandaki River and Jhong Khola is the last village of Lower Mustang and entry point to Upper Mustang. There is famous Red Painted Gompa in Kagbeni which is more than 1000 years old.

Activity Duration:

After breakfast, we trek to Muktinath passing by villages of Khingar and Jharkot. At some point after a steep climb, we arrive at a viewpoint which offers panoramic view of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Tukuche Mountains. We continue to Ranipauwa village from where we see Muktinath Temple on the foothill of Thorong La Pass. Muktinath Temple is one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for all Hindu and Buddhist people around the world.

Early morning, we visit Muktinath Temple. To Hindus, Mukti Kshetra is a place of Moksha or Salvation. This Temple is considered as 106th temple among 108 Divya Desam (Premium Temples) considered sacred by Sri Vaishnava. They believe that bathing in the 108 taps water and dip in holy pond here guarantees salvation after death. The Hindu god, Brahma, is said to have lit the eternal flames that burn at Muktinath. To Buddhists, Muktinath is a place where the great sage guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) came to meditate. For Tibetan Buddhist, this is very important places for Dakinis, goddesses known as Sky Dancers and one of the 24 tantric places. They believe the Idol (Murti) is a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara who symbolizes the compassion of all the Buddhas. Then we trek to Lupra village between Kagbeni and Jomsom hidden in the gorge of Panda Khola. The people of Lupra village follow Bon Po Religion which is pre Buddhist shamanic belief.

After visiting Bon Po Monastery and Lupra village, we descend down to valley until we reach at Jomsom.

After early breakfast, we walk to airport and fly back to Pokhara. In Pokhara, you may consider doing adventure activities like Paragliding, Micro Light flight, Bungee Jump, Zipline, cycling around Lakeside area. In the evening, you can walk around Lakeside Bazaar.

We fly back to Kathmandu and may consider doing sightseeing of Patan Durbar Square and Swyombhunath Stupa.Patan boasts of many famous sites and unique architecture. Krishna Mandir in this Square was built to honor an incarnation of Vishnu. One of the best examples of stone architecture in the world, scenes from Mahabharat, Asia's greatest mythological war, is carved on the temple's walls. Home to traditional artists and sculptors, one can find more temples dedicated to Ganesh (the elephant-headed god), Shiva, Narsingha, Taleju, and others are located at Patan Durbar Square. Late afternoon, we drive to Swayambhunath Stupa also called Monkey Temple, a Stupa in a small hill of Kathmandu over viewing Kathmandu valley and the surrounding mountains. In the evening, we will host dinner to celebrate the completion of Lower Mustang Trek.
