Overview

Nar Phu Valley Trek is the untouched and wilderness trek in Manang District north of Annapurna Conservation Area. Tucked between Annapurna and Manaslu Trail is also called ‘The Hidden Valley Trek’ was closed for the visitors till 2002. Trail to Nar Phu Valley combines high passes, remote villages, old monasteries, yak herders, rocky mountains, mountain views and centuries old Tibetan Culture. Kangla Pass at 5,320 m links Nar Phu with Manage is one of the highlights of the trek as it gives great views of Annapurna II, Gangarpurna, Himlung Himal and Tilicho Peak. We visit Tashi Lakhang Monastery in Phu Village which is listed out of the 108 world’s great Buddhist Monasteries. It is believed to be the last monastery constructed by Karma Sonam Rinpoche who came to Nepal with Dalai Lama in 1,959.

Nar Phu Valley Trek starts from drive to Besisahar and to Dharapani. We trek to Koto, leave Annapurna Circuit Trail and head to off the beaten trail to Nar Phu Valley. From Koto, we trek to Meta and to Phu. We spend 2 nights in Phu to explore the unspoiled village and excursion to Himlung Base Camp. From Phu, we trek to Nar and again spend 2 nights to explore village and old monasteries. From Nar, we trek to Nawal passing by Kangla Pass and to Manang. From Manang, we trek to Chame which is the last day of our trek before we drive back to Kathmandu.  We drive on mountain road from Besisahar to Dharapani and from Chame to Besisahar. The road is difficult but is very scenic passes through beautiful waterfalls, villages, terraced fields and mountain views.

There are options from Manang to join Annapurna Circuit Trek and cross Throung La Pass (5,416 m) down to Muktinath. Tilicho Lake is another option which requires 4 Extra Days. The best season for Nar Phu Valley Trek is Autumn and Spring and the special permit is required to enter the Restricted Nar Phu Valley. Once we enter Nar Phu Valley from Koto, we stay at basic lodges and one night at Nar Phedi Monastery.

Detail Itinerary


Upon arrival at Kathmandu International Airport,we will pick you up from the airport once you collect the baggage and exit the main building. Please look the signage of Alpine Holidays with your name. Then we will drive to the hotel. In the evening, our Trek Manager along with Trek Guide will brief you on trek and do the equipment check. After that, we will take you for welcome dinner to introduce you with Nepalese Culture and food habits.

Activity Duration:

This day, our city guide will take you for sightseeing of Kathmandu valley. We will first visit Pashupatinath Temple which is a Hindu Temple of Lord Shiva at the bank of Holy Bagmati River. People also cremate dead body with believe of going to heaven. Later on, we will visit Boudhanath Stupa, a Giant Stupa which is a center of Tibetan Buddhism. Then, we drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square where Nepalese Kings used to get Throne. Interesting places to see here are Taleju Temple, Statue of Kal Bhairabh and Hanuman, Temple of Jagannath (Erotic Temple) and Kastamandap Temple from which Kathmandu got its name. We visit Kumari Temple and pay homage to the living goddess, Kumari and also walk around the Freak streets which was famous during Hippie Era in 60's and 70's.

Activity Duration:

After breakfast, we drive to Dumre on Prithivi Highway and join the road to Besisahar. Besisahar is a beautiful town in Lamjung District from where Annapurna Circuit trek begins. After lunch at Besisahar, we drive to Dharapani on Off Road.

Activity Duration:

Our trail takes through pine and fir forest to Bagarchap. We visit white washed monastery and pass few villages. After a while the trail becomes steep ascend until we arrive Timang from where we get the view of Mt. Manaslu and Peak 29. On the way to Koto, we see Annapurna II , walk through forest and settle down for overnight.

Activity Duration:

As we are entering to Restricted Area, we register at the Police Authority and trek to Meta. Our trek starts on the river bank of Soti Khola. We cross water fall, pine forest and finally a suspension bridge to reach Dharamshala. Then we trek along the forest and make a steep ascend to arrive at Meta village. Form Meta Village, we see Annapurna II and Lamjung Village. We will have pack lunch on the way.

Activity Duration:

We trek on ups and downs trail and cross several bridges over streams. On the way, you see the ruined of Khampa Settlements of Kha Jhunam, Chyakhu and Kyang. We see the ruined fort at Kyang. And our trail continues passing Phu Stream and goes on rocky trail until we arrive at Phu Village. On the way, we see Blue Sheep. We will have pack lunch on the way.

It is better to spend extra day here to get proper acclimatization. Today we explore Phu village of Lama, Gurung and Ghale and learn about their Tibetan culture, yak herding, farming and harvesting. We also visit Tashi Lakhang Monastery which is listed out of the 108 world’s great Buddhist Monasteries. It is believed to be the last monastery constructed by Karma Sonam Rinpoche who came to Nepal with Dalai Lama in 1,959. We get the view of Himlung Himal and the day exploration can be made to Himlung Base Camp which takes 5 hours both ways.

Activity Duration:

We will retrace back way to Meta and heads toward Nar Phedi Monastery. This is the only accommodation available at this spot. We spend time with welcoming monks, chat and experience the Lama life for a day. The accommodation is simple neat and cleans at the monastery. Every evening, they perform Puja at around 5 pm and you can participate in the Puja.

We walk out of the Nar Phedi and follow the winding path up a hill towards Nar Village. We across beautifully painted bamboo topped chortens (Monastery) on the way to Nar. Nar is livelier than Phu village. We visit the several monasteries and walk around the Nar Village after lunch. Pisang peak along with other small peaks are visible from Nar.

Activity Duration:

Today is the long day of the trek as we are passing the Kangla Pass. The pass itself is not difficult but the high altitude might be challenging. Early morning, we trek to Jhombu Kharkha (Kangla Phedi) where we see yak herders camp. Then we ascend steep towards the pass for around 2 and half hours. From the top of the pass, we see magnificent views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Himlung Himal and Tilicho Peak. After spending some time, we descend down to Nagwal for around 3 hours.

After breakfast, we trek to Manang from Nagwal. Manang is a big village and famous for its Apple Orchards. We arrive at Manage for lunch. After lunch, we have walk around the village and can visit Old Manang Tenki, visit Gangapurna Lake and few monasteries. You meet so many trekkers crossing Throung La Pass and visiting Tilicho Lake.

After breakfast in the morning with the views of spectacular mountains around Manang area, we will head to Braga which 15 minutes and continue to Humde village along the Marsyangdi River. It takes about 3 hours and where we will have our lunch. There is also small airstrip. Then after lunch, we will keep smoothly walking until reaching Pisang village which takes 2 hours. We will go evening to upper Pisang to visit ancient Buddhist monastery and from where the views of Annapurna II, IV and Pisang peak are often awesome.

Today, we drive back to Besisahar. We stop at Chame for little time as it is the administrative headquarter of Manang district. We continue our drive and get to Koto where we headed for Nar Phu Trek. From Koto, we join the same way drive back to Besisahar. We spend a night in Besisahar as Off road 6/7 hours drive will be tiring.
